Curriculum Information

English

In English, we are basing our learning around our topics: Fairy Tales and Explorers. The children will be focusing on different types of texts such as stories, non-chronological reports, fictional writing, instruction writing and more. They will be learning how to use capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, adjectives and more.

Spelling

We use Rising Stars for our spellings from year 2. Each week the children will be learning about a different spelling rule though activities and games. Spelling rules with examples of spellings will go out in Spelling books every week, to come back in the following Wednesday. Children are not expected to learn a list of words, it's about knowing the spelling rule and thinking of words that follow this rule. We do not do spelling tests, we want them to learn how to spell these words in their writing so in their homework, if they spell any words that we've covered, please support them in spelling these correctly.

Reading

We will be starting our whole class reading sessions. We will be using VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Predictions, Explain, Retrieval and Sequence) to learn how to answer comprehension questions. Each week we will focus on a different text and a particular VIPER.

We have a slot each week for library where the children are able to choose a book for pleasure and we read a story each day in class.

We aim to read with individual children as often as we can and will move children up book bands when we feel they are ready based on their word reading and comprehension skills.

Maths

We follow White Rose Maths at Long Crendon. In Year 2 we focus on strengthening their number skills using the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We also develop their understanding in other mathematical areas such as Measurement, Geometry, Shape and Place Value. Within all of the areas of Maths, we challenge the children to have a greater depth of understanding by practicing tasks that develop their reasoning skills.

Science

Our topics in Science cover: Living Things and Their Habitats, Everyday Materials, Plants and Animals, including Humans. We aim to bring science to life by preparing many practical experiments and tasks which help to engage them when learning scientific knowledge.

History

We learn about different people across different periods of time in history which are linked to our topics of study. In the classroom we use a visual timeline to help children understand chronology and the difference between the recent past and a long time ago in the past.

RE

RE is taught once a week, looking into the different religions that are practiced in our community and all around the world. We focus on learning key knowledge and understanding that we all have similarities and differences between us.

PE

PE is on Wednesday and Thursday. The children cover a number of skills in different sports and prepare for sports day too.

PSHE and Citizenship

We use the Jigsaw curriculum for our PSHE curriculum which covers: Being Me In My World, Celebrating Differences, Dreams & Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me.

Art and DT

We teach the children new skills throughout the year and learn about famous artists of the past and present.

Forest School

Forest School is taught by Mrs Simons on Tuesday afternoon, every other week.

Music

Music is taught by Mr Lee on Tuesday afternoon every other week.
