Curriculum Information Spring 2026
English:
This term in English, we will be exploring a range of engaging texts and writing styles.
During the first half term, the children will be reading Vlad and the Great Fire of London. They will develop their understanding of the Great Fire of London and use the story as inspiration to write diary entries from the perspective of characters. This will work alongside our history topic including our visit from History Off The Page and our Great Fire of London day in February. We will also explore poetry through the traditional poem London’s Burning, before creating our own poems based on this text.
After half term, our focus will move to instruction writing. The children will learn how to write clear and organised recipes, using precise vocabulary and step-by-step instructions.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG):
Alongside our English lessons, we will be developing the children’s grammar and punctuation skills. The children will learn to:
Write sentences using ‘or’
Use ‘if’ or ‘because’ to join clauses
Write and use expanded noun phrases
Recognise and write statements and commands
Use and maintain the present or past tense correctly
Use capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences
Use commas in a list
Use the suffixes -er and -est to form adjectives
Use apostrophes for contractions
Use apostrophes to mark singular possession
Reading:
We have a daily reading slot after lunch, during which time we read a variety of books sometimes altogether and sometimes in groups. We will use VIPERS to work on the children's comprehension of their reading. VIPERS looks at Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising.
Spelling:
Spellings will be sent home on Fridays to allow the children time to become familiar with them. We will practise and explore these spellings during the week, before learning a new spelling rule for the following week.
The spelling lists will include a mixture of common exception words (words that cannot be sounded out) as well as words that follow the spelling rule the children have been learning in class.
Maths:
This term in Maths, the children will develop their understanding of money by counting and comparing amounts in pence and pounds, choosing appropriate coins and notes, making the same amounts, calculating totals and finding change, including solving two-step problems. They will also explore measurement, learning to measure, compare and order length, mass and capacity using standard units such as centimetres, metres, grams, kilograms, millilitres and litres, and applying the four operations to these measures. In addition, the children will build strong foundations in multiplication and division by recognising and making equal groups, using arrays, doubling and halving, and learning the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables, including dividing by 2, 5 and 10.
Science:
This term in Science, the children will be learning about plants and living things. They will explore different types of plants, learn about the parts of a plant and discover what plants need to grow, including carrying out an investigation into the effects of light and dark. The children will also study living things and their habitats, exploring a range of habitats such as local, polar, desert, ocean and woodland environments, as well as microhabitats. They will learn about diets and simple food chains, and develop their understanding of what is living, dead or has never been alive.
History 1st Half term:
In History this half term, the children will be learning about the Great Fire of London, an event beyond living memory that was significant nationally. They will explore what happened on key dates during the fire and learn about important historical figures such as Thomas Farriner, Samuel Pepys and King Charles II, and the roles they played. The children will investigate why the fire spread so quickly and how it was eventually put out. They will develop their historical skills by sequencing events in chronological order, organising ideas through labelling and writing, and using sources such as artefacts and diary entries to answer questions about the past. New historical vocabulary will be introduced to support their understanding of this important event.
Geography - 2nd half term:
In the second half term, the children will develop their geographical knowledge and skills by learning to locate the seven continents and five oceans using world maps, globes and atlases. They will focus on the United Kingdom, confidently locating the four capital cities and identifying their human and physical characteristics, as well as understanding where their own town or village is in relation to the capital city. The children will build their map skills by using compass points and locational language, recognising landmarks and features on aerial photographs, and drawing simple maps with keys and symbols. They will also explore their local area through walks and observations, identifying and classifying human and physical features, using simple data collection methods such as tally charts and pictograms, and asking and answering questions about what their data shows.
RE:
This term in Religious Education, the children will be learning about religious stories and what they tell believers about special people and prophets. They will explore stories about Jesus, Guru Nanak, Krishna and Muhammad, identifying events and miracles that show why these figures are considered special by some people. The children will learn what a prophet is, how people in stories responded to prophets, and why figures such as Jesus and Muhammad are important to believers today. They will also make comparisons between different religious stories and reflect on what these stories teach people about beliefs and values.
PSHE:
This term in PSHE, the children will be learning about Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me. In Dreams and Goals, they will explore how to set realistic goals, persevere, recognise their own strengths, celebrate achievements, and work effectively with partners and in groups. In Healthy Me, the children will learn how to keep their bodies healthy, understand how medicines work and how to use them safely, make healthy snack choices, and manage feelings of relaxation and stress. They will also develop a positive attitude towards caring for their bodies and sharing healthy habits with others.
Art - 1st Half term:
In Art this half term, the children will be working with clay to develop their making and shaping skills. They will learn how to flatten and smooth clay, roll shapes and create different marks and textures. The children will practise making pinch pots and safely joining clay pieces using the scoring and slipping technique. They will design and draw a house before planning and creating a clay house tile, adding recognisable features by impressing objects into the surface and joining simple clay shapes to create patterns and textures.
DT - 2nd Half term:
In the next half term in Design & Technology, the children will be learning about healthy eating and the main food groups, identifying which foods belong to each group. They will explore the taste, texture and smell of different foods and use this knowledge to plan and design their own wraps, thinking carefully about flavour combinations. Finally, the children will construct a wrap that meets their design brief and plan, developing their practical cooking skills.
Computing:
In computing we are going to be using a fresh scheme of work, and in the first half term we will be looking at Word Processing.
The children will be exploring word-processing software by using keyboard shortcuts, importing images and applying simple editing tools such as bold, italics, underlining and changing font colour.
P.E: In PE this term, pupils will be learning a range of games that involve hitting, catching, and running. After half term, the focus will move to activities involving attacking, defending, and shooting. Each week, children will take part in one lesson based on these game topics and one lesson dedicated to developing specific PE skills, helping to build confidence, coordination, and teamwork.
