Curriculum Information
Spring Term 2026
Spring Term Topic:
Kings and Queens

Below is a brief overview and does not include every subject on the Year 4 timetable attached below. More information, such as knowledge and skills progression documents for each subject, is available on the school website under the 'About Us' tab.
Maths
The Spring Term begins with a further block on Multiplication and Division; this time looking at Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100 and then using various methods to multiply and divide 2 and 3 digit numbers. We will then look at Length and Perimeter, followed by Fractions and Decimals towards the end of the term.
English
Our Guided Reading text for Spring 1 is 'Demon Dentist' by David Walliams and for Spring 2 it is 'Miraculous Journey' of Edward Tulane. As always, you are welcome to buy your child to use their own in class, but we do have enough to share between two. Our Spelling and Grammar lessons will look at the use of apostrophes for possession, fronted adverbials, nouns and direct speech. Our spelling lists will focus on words ending -sion, -ssion and -cian, as well as words ending -ture and -sure. 'Big Write' continues every Friday: the children love this opportunity to let their creativity flow independently and have produced some amazing narratives as well as formal letters and non-fiction texts.
Humanities
The first half of the term looks at the History topic of 'Kings and Queens'. We will be looking in detail at significant monarchs, such as Alfred the Great, William the Conqueror, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 1. We will also be unpicking complicated concepts such as different governing styles and ways of ruling. Geography follows after half term and we will be investigating our food supply, asking 'Where does our food come from?'
Science
Science in the Spring Term begins with a topic on Sound using decimeters in small groups. We will be looking in detail at Vibrations, The Ear, Volume and Pitch. We will then move onto a unit about Electricity in the second half of the Spring Term.
Art and Design / DT
Our Art topic for the first half of term looks at Painting and Mixed Media, exploring composition, hue, proportion, shade still life, contrast, tint and tone. Our DT topic for the second half of the term involves cooking.
RE:
Our Spring 1 Term topic asks 'Just how important are our beliefs?' and looks at birth ceremonies in various religions as a starting point. In Spring 2, we move on to look at 'Who was Jesus Really?'
French:
We are looking at numbers, including conversations about months and birthdays, followed by a topic looking at discussing the weather!
Homework
The most important element of homework is reading: please listen to your child read at least two or three times each week. In addition to reading, please continue to use 'Times Tables Rockstars', or any other method (see links below) to improve your child's recall. At the end of Year 4, the school is required to test your child's times table knowledge under timed conditions on an iPad or computer. This is known as the 'Multiplication tables check' (MTC) and is statutory for all year 4 pupils - see the link below for an idea of what this test will look like.
Your child may also do a task from the 'Kings and Queens' homework grid attached that has already been handed out to the children. (I accidentally gave out the 'Kings and Queens' homework grid at the start of Autumn 2 - apologies.) If you run out of tasks, please finish any on the Maya homework grid given out at the start of the academic year. A new homework grid will be given out and posted at the start of the Summer Term. As always, homework needs to be handed in on Wednesdays and will be returned on Fridays.
If you have any spare time, please practise the Statutory Spellings for Year 3 and 4 - attached below.
