Curriculum Information
Writing
This term in English we will be basing our work around the book The Egyptian Cinderella. We will be creating character descriptions of the dreadful servant girls. In the process we will be consolidating our Year 2 knowledge on nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and use of the present tense. After that, we will be developing our own narratives of the story with some plot twists. Here, we will concentrate on coming up with descriptive settings, using techniques such as expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases. Along the way we will be reading extracts from other high quality texts to support our learning.
After half term, we will be exploring the wonderful book of Egyptology, which is based on the diaries of a ficticious English archeologist. This will inspire us to create our own non chronological reports on the gods of Ancient Egypt. We will be concentrating on formal language, past tense and using mind-boggling facts.
Reading
Over the term will be practising a variety of comprehension (VIPERS) skills including: vocabulary development, inferencing, predicting, explaining, retrieving and summarising. Reading is such an important skill; it really unlocks all areas of the curriculum. We will have daily reading sessions - a mix of individual, guided reading groups and whole class reading. The children will have their library session on Tuesdays and will have access to a large selection of class books each day.
Spellings
There will be a weekly spellings lesson and we will be following the Rising Stars programme of study. We will also be running Phonics groups to continue this support beyond KS1.

Maths
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme at Long Crendon. Throughout this term, we will be covering Place Value, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division. We will be stretching and challenging the children by including both fluency and problem solving sessions, aided by practical equipment to consolidate their learning. The children will all be given a Times Table Rock Stars log in so they can practise their multiplication at home.
RE
In RE we will be studying the concept of religion within the community. We will explore different faiths and how their religious beliefs and practices affect their lives and how they contribute to the wider community, as well as their own.
PSHE
We are following the Jigsaw PSHE scheme and our focus is 'Being Me in My World'. Children will be learning about relationships within families, friendships and communities. They will think about choices they make and their effect on others.
History
Our History topic this half term is all about The Ancient Egyptians, including their way of life, their Pharaohs and their gods. We will also be having a whole day of history on 23rd October with the education organisation, History Off the Page, who will transform our school hall into a Pharaoh's court.
Science
In Science we will be looking at skeletons - their function, the major bones involved and how they differ across the animal kingdom. After half term, we will be studying diet and nutrition and then investigating rocks - their properties and ways to identify them. We like to get the children working practically as much as possible to use their investigative skills.
Art & DT
In Art, we will be studying the art of the Ancient Egyptians. We will be making papyrus and then creating our own pictures in the style of the Ancient Egyptians. In DT we will be using our sewing and textiles skills to make Egyptian collars.
PE
In the Autumn Term, we will be playing Badminton and Tag Rugby.
ICT
At Long Crendon we use Purple Mash in our ICT lessons. This term we are learning how to respond to emails, and how to create them. We are also learning how to stay safe and what to do if an email makes us feel uncomfortable.
French
This term, we will be learning about French greetings.
Homework
Learning Log Homework
Homework is due in on a Wednesday and handed back to the children on Fridays
We have a choice of tasks to complete from our homework grid (see below).
This term the learning log tasks are linked to our topic of the Ancient Egyptians.
Reading Diaries
Please bring in reading books and diaries every day. We encourage children to read with an adult at least 3 x per week at home.
Times Tables Practice
We encourage children to complete Times Tables Rock stars at home 3 x per week to support their times tables knowledge.

Parent / Teacher Partnership
We are always open and very happy to discuss your child's schooling. Each day after school we are at the gate should you wish to catch us. You can email or phone the office with queries and questions, which we will endeavour to respond to quickly. And, as well as this we can offer face-to-face meetings or phone calls, which again, can be arranged by the office.
