Curriculum Information

Writing

This term in English we will be basing our work around the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We will be analysing the characters of Charlie and Mr Willie Wonka, in the process consolidating our learning from last term on character descriptions.  We will be looking closely at the day that Charlie wins the Golden Ticket and using drama to consider the changes in emotion he goes through in those few hours.  We will be looking at a range of diaries and the features that are used, to come up with our own diaries for Charlie's day.   We will concentrate on using a range of tenses, on organising our sentences into paragraphs and on using direct speech accurately.  Along the way we will be reading extracts from other high quality texts to support our learning and comprehension skills.

Reading

Over the term will be practising a variety of comprehension (VIPERS) skills including: vocabulary development, inferencing, predicting, explaining, retrieving and summarising.  Reading is such an important skill; it really unlocks all areas of the curriculum. We will have daily reading sessions - a mix of individual, guided reading groups and whole class reading.  The children will have their library session on Tuesdays and will have access to a large selection of class books each day.

Spellings

There will be a weekly spellings lesson and we will be following the Mrs Mactivity programme of study.  We will send home the spellings at the end of each week for you to practise with your child.

Maths

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme at Long Crendon. Throughout this term, we will be covering Place Value, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division. We will be stretching and challenging the children by including both fluency and problem solving sessions, aided by practical equipment to consolidate their learning.  The children will all be given a Times Table Rock Stars log in so they can practise their multiplication at home.

RE

In RE we will be studying the idea of right and wrong and how the major World Views can support our understanding of this.

PSHE

We are following the Jigsaw PSHE scheme and our focus is 'Being Me in My World'.  Children will be learning about relationships within families, friendships and communities.  They will think about choices they make and their effect on others.

History

Our History topic this half term is all about The Stone Age.

Science

In Science we will be looking at soils and fossils.  The children will have the opportunity to investigate different types of soil and describe them by their features.  We will also be learning about the process of fossilisation and hearing about the work of a paleontologist.

Art & DT

In Art, we will be developing our drawing skills, taking inspiration from the natural world.  We will be applying more complex lines and marks to represent texture, tone and pattern, including drawing 3D objects and also furthering our use of different media to create Art.

PE

In the Spring Term, we will be playing Badminton and Tag Rugby.

ICT

We will be learning how to compose and send an email and also how to recognise when an email may be fake.

French

This term, we will be learning about colours and applying this knowledge to different animals.

Homework

Learning Log Homework

Homework is due in on a Wednesday and handed back to the children on Fridays

We have a choice of tasks to complete from our homework grid (see below).

This term the learning log tasks are linked to our topic of the Ancient Egyptians.

Reading Diaries

Please bring in reading books and diaries every day.  We encourage children to read with an adult at least 3 x per week at home.

Times Tables Practice

We encourage children to complete Times Tables Rock stars at home 3 x per week to support their times tables knowledge.

Parent / Teacher Partnership

We are always open and very happy to discuss your child's schooling.  Each day after school we are at the gate should you wish to catch us. You can email or phone the office with queries and questions, which we will endeavour to respond to quickly. And, as well as this we can offer face-to-face meetings or phone calls, which again, can be arranged by the office.
