Curriculum Information

Spring Term

Writing

Our writing this term will be focused around the texts 'Diary of Anne Frank'. We will be using the text to guide our writing and will be focusing on diary entries, biographies.  During the second half of the term, we will be using the text 'Pig-Heart Boy' by Malorie Blackman where children will be writing persuasive speeches and letters.

Reading

Our Guided Reading text will be the same text as in our writing lessons.  Children will be actively participating in various activities while using VIPERS to develop their understanding of the text.  While our reading for pleasure texts will be the DK books - Weather. It is important that your children read everyday for at least 5 - 10 mins.  This will improve their reading skills as well as their love for reading.  Please encourage them to do so and to write their comments in their Homework/Reading Diaries.

SPaG

SPaG will be taught throughout our writing lessons and as distinct lessons when needed.  During this term, we will continue to focus on all the grammar concepts to be learnt during KS2 and we will continue targeting spelling using the Year 5 and 6 Statutory Spelling List.  A copy of this term's spelling can be found in the links at the end of the page.  Parents please encourage your child to practice their spelling lists.

Maths

In Year 6 we follow the White Rose Maths scheme at Long Crendon School.  During the first half of the Spring term we will be continuing with Multiplying and Dividing Fractions; Converting units of Measurement; Ratio and Algebra.  We will then move on to learning about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals; converting between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Area, Perimeter and Volume as well as Statistics. Constant practice of these concepts as well as their multiplication and division facts will help your child become confident in Maths.

History - World War 2

In this unit, pupils will explore the causes and key events of the Second World War, learning about the countries involved and important dates from 1939 to 1945. They will study the significance of key figures such as Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler and Anne Frank, and gain an understanding of the Holocaust and the persecution of Jewish people by the Nazis. Children will also discover how the war affected everyday life, including evacuation, rationing and the changing role of women, as well as learning about major bombing campaigns such as the Blitz and the Battle of Britain. Where possible, learning will be enriched by exploring the impact of the war on the local area through museum artefacts and local history.

Geography - Where does our energy come from?

In this unit, pupils will develop their geographical knowledge by learning about the position and importance of the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones, as well as identifying and locating a range of UK cities on maps. They will build map-reading skills by using six-figure grid references to identify human and physical features on Ordnance Survey maps. Children will also explore key aspects of economic activity, including trade links and the distribution of natural resources and energy, studying these at a global scale and through focused case studies of Texas and the Port of Blyth.

Science

In the first half of the term, pupils will learn how light behaves, including that luminous objects emit light, light travels in straight lines, reflects from objects into the eye, can be refracted when it passes through different materials, and forms shadows when blocked by opaque objects. They will also explore that white light is made up of different colours—discoveries linked to Isaac Newton and Ibn al-Haytham—and understand how this leads to effects such as rainbows.

In the second half of the term, pupils will learn about the circulatory system and how it moves blood around the body, including the roles of the heart, blood, arteries, veins and capillaries. They will explore how blood carries oxygen and nutrients to cells, removes waste, and how the heart’s four chambers pump oxygenated and deoxygenated blood around the body to keep us healthy and active.

Art and Design & Technology

This term in Art, the children will be exploring drawing using the theme 'Make my voice heard'. They will learn that chiaroscuro means “light and dark” and is used to create dramatic, high-contrast images, as well as developing practical skills in applying this technique in their own artwork. They will also explore the work of Dan Fenelon and understand how artists use light and shadow to create impact and mood.

In Design and Technology unit, pupils will learn how structures can be strengthened by manipulating materials and shapes, and understand key design concepts such as footprint plans and prototypes. They will apply this knowledge by designing, building and refining a playground with a range of structures, considering how design choices can positively or negatively impact users and creating a suitable surrounding landscape.

PE

We will focus on a range of skills over the next term.  Please ensure children are dressed appropriately for these lessons.  Also be advised that no jewellery is allowed in these lessons.

Computing

At Long Crendon School we use the Kapow Scheme in our ICT lessons. In this unit, pupils will develop their understanding of digital technologies by learning why barcodes and QR codes were created and how they are used, including following a QR code treasure trail. They will also explore how data can be transmitted using infrared and RFID, before applying their skills to input, sort and analyse data in spreadsheets in order to interpret real-world customer scenarios.  In the next unit, pupils will develop their coding skills by iterating ideas through testing and refinement, clearly explaining what their programs do. They will use and explain loops and nested loops in Python, add comments to show understanding, and explore how computers use random numbers by decomposing, modifying and personalising algorithms.

Music - Taught by Mr Duncan

Religious Education

This term, pupils will explore how geography, history and culture influence religious practice, focusing on Hindu worship in the UK and India, Sikh identity and community life, and the symbolism of light across different worldviews. They will also learn about Buddhist ways of life, comparing monks and lay people, and understanding the different disciplines and practices Buddhists follow, while recognising that religious identity can be expressed in diverse ways, including non-theistic beliefs.

PSHE

Across the autumn term, the children will be focusing on two themes: Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me. In the first unit, pupils will develop self-awareness by recognising their own learning strengths and understanding what others value about them. They will learn how to set realistic yet challenging goals with clear success criteria, show empathy for people facing difficulties around the world, and work collaboratively while giving praise and appreciation for others’ achievements as they strive to make a positive difference.

In the next unit, pupils will learn how to take responsibility for their physical and emotional health, make positive choices for their wellbeing, and understand how drugs, alcohol and stress can affect the body and mind. They will also explore issues such as exploitation, gangs and pressure, developing strategies to manage stress, resist negative influences, seek help when needed, and recognise that people may have different attitudes towards mental health and illness.
