Curriculum information
Autumn Term Topic: The Benin Kingdom
This term, we will explore the rich history of the Benin Kingdom in West Africa. We will begin by discovering how the kingdom was first established and trace a timeline of key events from AD 400 to AD 1489. Along the way, we will learn about important people and rulers, including the Edo people, the influence of the Yoruba, the Ogiso rulers and the Obas. We will work like historians by examining artefacts, oral accounts, stories and legends, comparing different sources and considering why they sometimes tell different stories. We will also investigate Benin art and architecture and explain how these were shaped by religious beliefs and traditions.

English
Guided Reading: Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis
In Spring 1, we will be reading Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis, a powerful story that explores friendship, loyalty and the importance of protecting the natural world. Through this text, pupils will develop their reading skills, deepen their understanding of characters and themes, and take part in thoughtful discussions about the choices characters make. As usual, we will have enough copies to share in class, but if you would like your child to have their own copy, you are very welcome to purchase one. Reading is a vital skill that supports learning across the whole curriculum, so we encourage children to read at least three times a week at home where possible.

English: Spelling, Handwriting, Writing and SPAG (Spelling and Grammar)
This term, we will continue our learning journey in English by exploring spellings each week using our Mrs Mactivity programme and methods. We will have spelling lessons every Monday before lunch, and immediately after, we will practise our handwriting to make our writing neat and fluent. Throughout the term, we will take on exciting grammar challenges, focusing on using complex sentences in our narrative writing and discovering how changing sentence structure can affect the pace and feel of a story. English takes place every day, giving us plenty of time to read, write, and share our ideas with each other.
Maths – Multiplication, Division and Fractions
In Spring 1 maths, we will begin our learning journey by exploring different strategies for multiplication and division. We will practise using these strategies with increasingly larger numbers and see how they can help us solve real-life problems. Next, we will build on our understanding of fractions from last term, learning how to multiply and divide fractions and apply these skills in a variety of contexts.
Science – Changing Materials
This Spring, we will explore Changing Materials. We will investigate the properties of different materials and carry out experiments to test electrical conductivity and heat insulation. We will also explore how materials can change under different conditions and discover the reasons behind these changes. Along the way, we will work like real scientists, asking questions, making predictions, and recording our observations to learn more about the world around us.
P.E. – General Skills and Netball
This term in PE, we will enjoy developing our range of physical skills and playing netball. On Thursdays, we will focus on general PE skills, including coordination, balance, agility and teamwork through a variety of fun activities and games. On Fridays, we will concentrate on netball, practising passing, shooting, movement and teamwork to improve our skills and understanding of the game.
Forest School and Music:
Forest School and Music will alternate each week on Wednesdays (see timetable below).
Home Learning
Homework for Year 5 is optional. If you wish, your child pick a task from the grid linked to our history topic (The Benin Kingdom) - click on the document link below. If homework is completed, it should be handed in on Wednesdays.
