The team

The Year 5 team is Mr Owens, Miss Auster, Mrs Hutt and Mrs Edmunds.

English

This term in English, we will be learning about fantasy writing, hidden figures and space-related writing. Through this, we will learn about various SPaG techniques such as parentheses, relative clauses and fronted adverbials. The most important aspect of writing in Key Stage 2 is cohesion, so this will be the primary focus of our writing lessons.

Reading

We read daily through our story time slot before lunch, during which time we read our class text together. On Wednesday afternoons, we also have a specific guided reading slot with Mrs Duffy.

Maths

We are focusing on number this term. We are learning about place value to 1,000,000, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We follow the White Rose Hub scheme of work.

Science

Our science topic this term is space. We are learning about the way the solar system works as well as the meaning of words such as "year" and "day" in a scientific context. We have asked questions like "Why does the Sun look like it is moving?" and "Why do shadows change throughout the day?"

History

We have focused on Black History Month this term. We are currently tackling some very mature issues such as Apartheid, the Civil Rights Movement and the Transatlantic slave trade. We are also highlighting prominent black Britons, both in history and the present day.

RE

This term, we are answering the question "Is there any point to worship?" To answer this question, we are looking at the Hindu and Christian religions, how people worship and why they do it in this way. We have compared individual and collective worship and talked about the reasons people may do these.

PE

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Mr Owens teaches our Wednesday slot and Mrs Finlay teaches our Thursday slot. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

PSHE and Citizenship

This term we are looking at how we fit into our world. We have talked about what is meant by rights and responsibilities, what is expected of children in Year 5 and the reasons for rewards and consequences in society.

Home learning

We send out a homework grid once a term, on which you will find a wide variety of activities linked to our topics to try. We view the point of home learning as being to extend children's learning on a topic and, more importantly, to allow them to become enthused and excited about learning. We share children's learning each week.

Parent Partnership

We are always happy to discuss anything with parents and carers to help to support children in learning or to provide pastoral support. If you would like to meet, please contact the office to arrange this.

And so here we are again! Some suggestions of activities:

- finish/make a game for our games morning next Monday

- choose an activity from Learning Log

- this afternoon, we were having a French afternoon (luckily the croissants will keep!) - why not make a chocolate chaud and create a menu for a French Cafe - attached are some French vocab mats 

- go sledging, build a snowman! 

- practise some TTRockstars

- curl up with a book

- make a spellings wordsearch

I know how much the children enjoy a mystery so I have added a maths one and SPaG one (plus answers!)

Please do not feel any pressure to do any of this. They are simply suggestions. I know it is a very busy time of year and we all have different balls to juggle.
