The moment we decide to fulfil something, we can do anything – Greta Thunberg, environmental activist who has challenged world leaders that started a movement which has seen over 13 million children in 150 countries around the world participate in school strikes to raise awareness about climate change.

Year 2 Summer Term – Our Current Topic
What a Wonderful World!
This term, the children will be learning all about the world around them – from environmentalists who play an important part in caring for our world and what we can do to help, to looking closer to home at our village of Long Crendon.
Now the weather is getting warmer, our summer games start! PE the children will be learning striking and fielding skills to play games such as rounders. They will also start swimming lessons later on in the term.
In computing, the children will be developing their art skills, creating pictures using Purple Mash software.
In English, we have started Talk 4 Writing. In summer 1, we will be looking at Jack and the Beanstalk and will be building up to writing our own rags to riches tales.
In Science we will begin the summer term following on from Spring, learning all about plants and then will finish the year learning about animals and humans – which includes life cycles and diet and exercise.
In maths, year 2 will be learning about fractions, and measurements – length, mass and capacity as well as learning to tell the time and position and direction.

Y2 – Class Information
Homework is set on Friday and is expected back by the following Thursday. Children will have a grid of activities related to our topic, which they can choose from.
Reading a little bit every night is beneficial for your child’s learning not only in reading but in their writing too. Please write in their reading record when they read and if a book is finished.
When a book needs changing, your child can put it and their reading record in the ‘reading books to change’ box. One of us will check the diary and change the book and it will be handed out at the end of the day. As children become more fluent readers, they will be asked to choose their own books however their diaries still need to be handed in in the morning before this happens.
A new spelling rule is taught each week and then example words and the rule will be sent home in spelling books to reinforce at home. Spellings are taught for writing, so we do not expect the children just to learn a list of words. We would like them to understand the rule and be able to apply that to words they come across when they are writing. Spelling rules will be sent out on Friday.
As forest school is first thing on a Tuesday morning (alternate weeks for each group). Children can come dressed in their kit with their uniform in a bag. We will then send the kit back home at the end of the day for the following week. Wellies can stay at school.
PE is on Tuesday and Thursday however it is beneficial to have kit in all week.
