Curriculum Information

English

In English, we are basing are learning around our topic Frozen Planet. The children will be focusing on non-chronological reports this half term, using texts to support their understanding of non-chronological reports and the features they contain. They will be learning how to use commas in a list, questions marks for questions and understanding the present tense.

Spelling

We use Rising Stars for our spellings from year 2. Each week the children will be learning about a different spelling rule though activities and games. Spelling rules with examples of spellings will go out in Spelling books every Wednesday, to come back in the following Tuesday. Children are not expected to learn a list of words, it's about knowing the spelling rule and thinking of words that follow this rule. We do not do spelling tests, we want them to learn how to spell these words in their writing so in their homework, if they spell any words that we've covered, please support them in spelling these correctly.

Reading

After half term we will be starting our whole class reading sessions. We will be using VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Predictions, Explain, Retrieval and Sequence) to learn how to answer comprehension questions. Each week we will focus on a different text and a particular VIPER.

We have a slot each week for library where the children are able to choose a book for pleasure and we read a story each day in class.

We aim to read with individual children as often as we can and will move children up book bands when we feel they are ready based on their word reading and comprehension skills.

We follow White Rose Maths at Long Crendon. This term we will be covering place value to 100, addition and subtraction and shape. Please find more information on White Rose website: White Rose Long Term Map
